Buying a stock at well off its 52 week high that has developed support and shown a momentum shift is a simple but effective strategy. It uses the smartest and most beneficial aspects of technical analysis to strengthen a fundamentals-driven investment thesis. I started my investing career with a lot of success with this method – and I’m starting to find that although my education has run further ahead, in many respects I (and the rest of the financial community) are prone to overthink investments. Da Vinci said that “simplicity is the ultimate sophistication” and I have been actively trying to incorporate this into my investment process.

I screened for companies that are significantly off their 52 week high and whose 50day MA have recently crossed the 200day MA (golden cross). This is one of the most simple yet powerful technical patterns in terms of results, as well as the

Hybrid mortgage REITs invest in residential mortgage backed securities. While agency mREITs only invest in RMBSs with the backing of a federal agency hybrid mREITs also hold portfolios of RMBSs without agency insurance. Non-agency RMBSs offer considerably higher yields when compared to agency-backed RMBSs, but also carry with them the significant risk of borrower default. Conversely, agency-backed RMBS paper is deemed to have virtually no default risk, thanks to the federal agency backing, but provides a low yield that is comparable to similar maturity U.S. treasuries and other highly rated debt. Generally, most non-agency RMBSs are presently rated as junk.

Non-agency mortgages are generally divided into four main categories: (1) Prime; (2) Alternative-A (Alt-A); (3) Option Adjustable Rate Mortgages (Option ARMs); and (4) and Subprime. These categories can be subdivided, and some mortgages may even jump from one method to another after a set term. In 2007 and 2008, a

US News & World Report ranked Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Arlington as the second-best public school in the country this year, and the acclaimed, highly selective magnet school in Northern Virginia held the No. 1 rank in each of the five previous years. But some serious academic concerns have been raised by the school’s teachers about this year’s freshman class. An editorial in today’s Washington Examiner highlights the situation (the editorial followed a previous Examiner story on Sunday):

“Teachers are complaining about the “profound lack of preparation and readiness” exhibited by current members of the freshmen class. In a letter to admissions director Tanisha Holland and the Fairfax County School Board, faculty members wrote: “Simply put, these students are not succeeding, and many are not succeeding in spite of the tremendous support and remediation being offered to them by their teachers.” Holland responded that the school is “looking into the admissions process” to determine whether it could have done a better job of recruiting.

But Holland doesn’t have to look beyond her own office to discover the cause of what the faculty describes as an “alarming trend” in admitting unprepared students. They determined that 50 questions on the math portion of the admissions exam reflected standards that should have been mastered in sixth grade. Instead of being at least two grade levels ahead of their peers, some students admitted to TJ were two grade levels behind.

Critics claim that TJ’s dumbed-down admissions test was designed to increase enrollment of black and Hispanic students. If that’s the case, it’s been a failure even there. Only 13 Hispanics out of 222 applicants were admitted to the Class of 2015, and just six blacks out of 224 applicants. Since about 160 out of 480 freshmen need remediation, the vast majority must be white and Asian.

A more likely culprit is the changes made to TJ’s admissions policies, starting in 2004, which eliminated raw test scores and GPAs as the main criteria for admission. By 2009, highly subjective “student information sheets,” teacher recommendations and student essays made up 65 percent of the total score, whereas the weight given to the math portion of the admissions test and the applicant’s seventh- and eighth-grade math and science grades declined to just 35 percent. Students whose lack of talent or motivation in math and science is reflected in their lower grades and test scores are currently being admitted to TJ over their more academically accomplished peers.

These misguided policies seriously undermine the fundamental mission of this governor’s school, which was specifically designed to educate Virginia’s future scientists and mathematicians. When academic merit is superseded by teachers’ subjective judgments, a decline in standards is the all-too-predictable result.”

From “College Crackup and the Online Future,” by Mark C. Taylor, chairman of the department of religion at Columbia University, writing for Bloomberg:

“There is a widening gap between the rate at which knowledge is expanding and the rate at which colleges and universities change. In higher education, as in business, institutions must become more flexible and agile. Colleges and universities that can’t adapt will fail. Departments will either be eliminated or redesigned in ways that support more extensive collaboration among faculty members and students working in different areas.

These changes will meet considerable resistance, but they are unavoidable and will have beneficial results. In all areas of endeavor, innovation comes about by bringing together what is usually held apart. Just as artistic creativity often occurs by mixing different genres, so intellectual innovation frequently results from crossing different disciplines.

With growing competition abroad and increasing financial problems at home, the worldwide pre-eminence of U.S. higher education isn’t assured in the 21st century. Even if it were possible to increase funding in this era of shortsighted austerity, it wouldn’t be enough. A fundamental transformation in higher education will require a thorough rethinking of both what and how we teach.

Colleges and universities will have to be reorganized and create new strategies for cooperation and collaboration that will enable them to provide the best education to the most students for the lowest price. If we have the imagination and determination to rise to this challenge, we will be able to provide the education our children and grandchildren deserve and the world needs.”

Cosplay work today =3 Well… actually more like selling cosplay stuff day… >.> Above you can see what I’m working on! Can you guess what pokemon ears it is~? =3

The ear to the left is the one that is stuffed while the one to the right is still flat. You can really tell a difference o.o But I’m only showing this because this is not the one I’m selling >.< I don’t like how big it is so I’m going back to the smaller size. Thus, it’ll look a tad bit different in the end. (I think the back part of this also looks a tad bit off…)

But! I’m happy to announce that this summer will be super special. I have a project in the making to be released sometime in August (wooo!!) that is in collaboration with my brother~ Then I also have a full 2 month of cosplay commissions it looks like already o.o Like.. it’s crazy. Either people love my work or I just do it cheap LOL!! I should charge more >.> Maybe later~ I’ll just learn to work faster ^^

I also started the TV series The Nine Lives of Chloe King and honestly.. it gets kind of boring >.> And predictable. And the choice of actors are kind of annoying because the british accent doesn’t go with it >.< Weird huh? So I get slightly annoyed at it. But… I have nothing to watch at the moment.. unless I want to go try to find Sherlock….. hmmm… eh I’ll pass. I’ll look for something else to watch!

I’m not used to devote a post to popular culture, but I thought this Eurovision song contest was worth one. I was seriously disappointed because almost none of the songs I liked passed this semi finals…

Israel: Time by Izabo

Despite the fact their keyboard player was wearing a rather bizarre dress and the lead singer had undoubtedly one of the weirdest facial expressions I have ever seen, I really find it a pity Israel didn’t pass the semi finals. The song was retro, poppy and really cute in my opinion, and they had the best backdrop of all contestants (dripping clocks, surrealism oh my!)…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irDxBJNimyo&feature=related

Austria: Woki mit deim popo by Trackshittaz

Okay, admittedly I have a thing for german techno-style music. Can’t help it, every time I hear something like “Disco Pogo” I go all wild. No wonder that I cheered for Austria’s “Woki mit deim popo” (Shake your ass)… They had pole dancers in lime green minidresses, a nice loud backbeat, and when they suddenly went all Tron-style with led lights on their asses, I thought my TV would explode from too much awesome. Damn you people, whyduntyouvoteforaustria?!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Ttbsc8Fvjk

Russia: Party for everybody by Buranovskiye Babushki

Russian grannies know how to party… I am grateful for everyone who voted for this adorable troupe of old ladies. They can’t sing or dance -at all- but they are cute and they have a big spinning and smoke-producing cookie oven! The oldest of them is 77 (!) and they collect money in order to save their village church. Just one word: funniesttelevisionsinceinventionofthedamndevicepeople!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKNRGc71hjc&feature=related

So far my favorites from the first semi finals… Lets hope the second semi finals have more awesome AND LET IT PASS TO THE FINALS TOO!

A dear friend, who chooses to remain anonymous, sent these hysterical photos. Her Weekend Warrior Gone Bad commentary and photos below.

I took our daughter to a birthday party yesterday and before we left I asked hubby to please trim the bushes out front (as we finally got the trimmer back from his mom who had been holding it hostage for months). I even suggested he not get too crazy with the trimming (as he has done in the past) and to just neaten them up a bit. Several hours later I come home and this is what I find.

I was pleased when I looked at one side of the house….

Two MBA students won $80,000 for a plan to bring healthy food to low-income communities as part of a new social entrepreneurship competition, the Kellogg School of Management announced this week.

Saloni Doshi ’12 and Chelsea Katz ’12 won the inaugural Kellogg Social Entrepreneurship Award from the Carol and Larry Levy Social Entrepreneurship Center, funds that will enable them to launch Fresh Takes Kitchen, a service they came up with to provide low-income families with wholesome food while also teaching them about nutrition. In addition to the award money, the students will also receive continuing support through the Levy Lab. In return, Doshi and Katz commit to working full time on the venture after graduation and sharing their progress and insights.

According to Jamie Jones, associate director of social enterprise at the school, Kellogg is the only business school to offer an award this large to both nonprofit and for-profit social enterprises. The inspiration for the Social Entrepreneurship Award was student Keita Suzuki ’09, who founded Kaien, an initiative to train high-functioning people with autism to work in software firms.

According to Jones, the award is influencing prospective applicants to Kellogg. “We have a growing number of students who are interested in using their business skills to create sustainable social change,” she said. “I have heard from prospective students who are excited about the award. They say it’s clear that Kellogg gets the importance of social enterprises, both nonprofit and for-profit.”

Doshi and Katz set a $150,000 funding goal for the first six months of their new venture, and the award puts them more than halfway there. They plan to launch in August, providing four to five meals a week to low-income individuals along with cooking demonstrations and educational sessions in partnership with other organizations.
