The Senior Associate Director of Admissions for the Ross School of Business, Jon Fuller, spent last weekend on campus for the annual Women’s Super Saturday Interview event. In addition to reflecting on innovation and leadership, the Dean of the Haas School of Business, Rich Lyons, welcomed some new staff members in finance and marketing. The Dean of Darden School of Business, Bob Bruner, shared a slew of his favorite reads over the past week. Stanford GSB is set to launch Entrepreneurship Week at the end of February, according to Dean Garth Saloner.

Need plans for Valentine’s Day? Chicago Booth students and staff will be hosting an online chat covering careers in strategy and consulting. As Round 2 interviews heat up at the Wharton School, the director of MBA admissions shared some advice for candidates. In the spirit of entrepreneurship, Duke / Fuqua kicked off their start-up challenge this week. Some research at UT Austin / McCombs broke down a formula for successful SuperBowl ads.

UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business Primed to Expand Energy Research, Curriculum

The Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley has named a new executive director for its Energy Institute (EI@Haas) as part of an effort to expand its energy curriculum and research, the school announced late last month. Elizabeth Bailey, a former economic consultant and award-winning MBA instructor at Arizona State University, will assume the newly created executive director position beginning this month.

Bailey will develop and coordinate the energy curriculum for MBAs and undergraduates as well as teach an energy course at Berkeley-Haas. She will also engage in applied research on energy and environmental issues to support the business and policy communities.

Bailey comes to Haas from NERA Economic Consulting, a Boston group that provides expert economic analysis, testimony, advice and policy recommendations to corporations and government agencies. As a vice president there, she specialized in the economics of antitrust and has prepared testimony in court proceedings and presented her research before the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission. Before that she was on the faculty of Arizona State University’s W.P. Carey School of Business, where she taught courses in managerial economics, competitive strategy and environmental sustainability, decision analysis and statistics.

“Liz’s research and teaching credentials are a perfect fit with EI@Haas’ goals and will allow us to meet the growing demand for applied economic energy research and courses,” Haas Associate Professor Catherine Wolfram, co-director of the Energy Institute, said in a statement. “We are thrilled to welcome someone of her caliber and look forward to collaborating with her.”

“I’m most excited about being able to be part of this team of research-active people who are doing very policy-relevant work,” Bailey said.

Martha Coakley, Massachusetts Attorney General: Mortgage Settlement Is Only The Beginning

The $25 billion settlement with five of the nation’s largest banks over charges of widespread mortgage fraud, announced Thursday, isn’t the end for Massachusetts.

Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley said at a press conference Thursday that she plans to pursue further relief for homeowners.

“We believe there is still much work to do,” said Coakley, who was one of the more outspoken attorneys general during the settlement negotiations. “This is only five banks … We have Fannie and Freddie. We have 19 other lenders.”

Rustbelt Recovery: Michigan Has a Budget Surplus And a Lower Jobless Rate Than Washington D.C.

NY Times — “Over most of the past decade, budget deliberations in Michigan have taken on a glum and familiar monotony: What do we cut now? But the state that experienced an economic downturn earlier, deeper and longer than most of the rest of the country has made an unlikely discovery as its officials closed out its latest financial books: Michigan has a $457 million surplus. Even more surprising: Revenues, which had sunk or had been mostly flat for all but one year since 2000, have grown. Not a lot, but grown.

Lately signs have shifted. Manufacturing jobs, often declared dead by frustrated workers, have picked up. United States automakers have increased production, saying sales are up, and General Motors, only a few years after a federal rescue and bankruptcy, recaptured in 2011 a crown some thought was merely a dusty memory — that of the world’s largest automaker.

In part, as a result, the unemployment rate in Michigan, which reached 14.1 percent in 2009 and had regularly been among the worst several states in the nation, has lately been among states showing the most significant and continuing rates of improvement, though at 9.3 percent in December it is still above the national average.

By the close of the state’s 2011 budget year, in September, Michigan had collected $8.8 billion in general fund revenues — more than $1 billion less the amount collected in, say, 2000, but noticeably up from the $7.6 billion in Michigan’s coffers in 2010, thanks to growth in state income and sales tax revenues. Officials are now projecting $632 million more in revenues over the next two years than they had been expecting.”

MP: After leading the country for most months in 2008 and 2009 with the highest jobless rate in the country, Michigan’s economy has now recovered to the point that it ranked No. 11 for the month of December. Nine states and even the District of Columbia at 10.4% had higher jobless rates than Michigan’s December 9.3% rate. Nevada now ranks No. 1 in the country at 12.6% and more than three percentage points above Michigan, and California has the second highest state jobless rate for December at 11.1%, almost two full points above Michigan.

5. Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin announced this week that 10 states have signed on to her plan to replace aging government vehicles with ones that run on compressed natural gas. Together, the group of states plans to buy 5,000 natural gas vehicles.

Well, what do you know, I am a little bit nauseous watching this, actually, though I can’t tell if it’s really because the crowd with their diamonds up is getting prismatic and refracted and spun in a cosmic superfluousness of “special effects” or that ‘Ye’s “naagh!!” brays are just particularly obnoxious in this live take. Or maybe because the last 20 seconds are kind of Marco Brambillo-ish, but not really?
